Answering some common questions about Ash Wednesda Answering some common questions about Ash Wednesday (tomorrow!) and the Lenten season below:
✝️ What is Ash Wednesday?
Ash Wednesday comes from the ancient Jewish tradition of penance and fasting. As the priest applies the ashes to a person's forehead, he speaks the words: "Remember that you are dust, and to dust you shall return." We wear ashes on our forehead head symbolizing the dust from which God made us.
✝️ What is Lent?
Lent is a 40 day season of prayer, fasting, and almsgiving that begins on Ash Wednesday (today!) and ends at sundown on Holy Thursday. It has been around since 325 AD!! During Lent, we seek the Lord in prayer by reading Sacred Scripture; we serve by giving alms; and we practice self-control through fasting to anticipate the celebration of the Risen Christ on Easter.
✝️ Can I eat meat?
Ash Wednesday is an obligatory day of abstinence from meat and fasting for Catholics. Fridays during Lent are also days of abstinence from meat (yay fish tacos 🐟)!
✝️ Do I have to go to Mass tomorrow?
Ash Wednesday is not a holy day of obligation, but it is still spiritually fruitful to participate in the Mass on this day!
✝️ How can I prepare myself for a good Lent?
Watch the reel in our profile for some tips from Fr. Bolster!
“Lent is a campaign of Christian service.” As “Lent is a campaign of Christian service.”
Ash Wednesday is NEXT WEEK! Are you prepared for battle?
Here are three weapons the Church gives us to fight the battle well this Lent.
1. Pray. Ask the Lord where He is inviting you to go deeper. Perhaps it’s giving him more time or perhaps it’s going even deeper in the time you’re already giving him. One practical suggestion is leaving your phone outside the room whenever you pray. Give the Lord the attention he deserves!
2. Fast. Whether food, drink, or social media we all often turn to things for comfort that are not our Lord. Where do you turn to when stressed or nervous? Perhaps consider giving that up to allow the Lord to be your only comfort.
3. Give. Often we attach ourselves to our possessions and in the process forget to who we belong to. Give your time or give your money. Let the Lord remind you of who you belong to by giving what belongs to you.
Know we are praying for you this Lent. Let’s go fight 👏🏻

“His love is as ardent as it is true.
He is as lavish of His promises as He is faithful in keeping them.
He is as jealous of my love as He is deserving of it.
I am in all things His debtor, but He bids me call Him Friend.” - Msgr Robert Hugh Benson

Praise the Lord for a weekend filled with community, prayer, learning, sacraments, and grace! We laughed, we cried, we sang, and we encountered Christ in so many different ways.
Many thanks to our retreat planning and ministry team and staffers for making this weekend possible, and to everyone far and near who prayed for us. Mark your calendars for February 24-26, and invite a friend or two to our next retreat :)

— Pope St. John Paul II
This past Wednesday, we had the blessing of doing a Eucharistic Procession through Belmont’s campus! We chanted hymns, offered prayers for our classmates, and handed out small flyers explaining our actions to passers-by. Many thanks to everyone who came to adore and walk with our Lord, and to our student leaders and staff for making this happen!

starting this thursday! CREDO (Latin for ‘I be starting this thursday!
CREDO (Latin for ‘I believe’) is for all students who are curious about what Catholics *actually* believe. We will explore questions such as: What are faith and reason, and why do they matter? Who is God, and how does He reveal Himself? How did sin come into the world, and what does it mean for us? Can we be redeemed, and if so, how?
We hope to see you on Thursday at 6:15 for our first discussion!
